Comparing the Hyundai Kona to the Honda HR-V
At Dave Hallman Hyundai in Erie, PA

Subcompact crossovers are ideal for Erie drivers seeking extra practicality with minimal exterior space requirements from their daily driver. And the 2023 Hyundai Kona is one of the segment's most compelling models. It offers a comfortable cabin, flexible cargo space, and a long list of amenities like wireless smartphone integration and advanced safety technologies. Plus, its nimble size and capable handling make it well suited to navigating crowded city streets and parking lots.
Of course, the Kona isn't alone in its class-subcompact crossovers make up one of the industry's most competitive segments. Still, the Kona offers a well-rounded package with plenty of appeal at an exceptional value. As an example, here's a quick look at how it measures up to one of its most prominent class competitors, the Honda HR-V.
Performance
The 2023 Kona and 2023 HR-V offer similar performance in their base configurations. The Kona's 2.0-liter four-cylinder (147 horsepower, 132 lb-ft of torque) is a bit stronger than the HR-V's 1.8-liter engine (141 hp, 127 lb-ft), but both models deliver an overall balanced and composed ride.
However, if you're looking for a small crossover with more internal motivation to power your Fairview drives, the Kona's two turbocharged upgrade options give it a clear edge. N Line and Limited models equip a 1.6-liter turbo-four (195 horsepower, 195 lb-ft) and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. And the Kona N unlocks the small crossover's true potential with a 2.0-liter turbo-four (276 hp and 289 lb-ft) and a host of performance enhancements, like an electronic limited-slip differential, Pirelli P-Zero Tires, electronically controlled suspension. Offering hot hatch performance and handling while still maintaining a sense of practicality makes the Kona N an enticing choice, and it's something that the Honda HR-V doesn't have an answer for. In fact, the Honda HR-V is available with just one powertrain option, while the Kona comes in the three above plus a hybrid and electric vehicle configuration.
Features and Value
The Hyundai Kona offers a lot for your money, with more and better features than the Honda HR-V despite a lower MSRP. The Hyundai Kona comes standard with an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and advanced driver-assist technologies, including Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Keeping Assist, Lane Following Assist, and Driver Attention Warning. For 2023, the Hyundai Kona now includes blind spot monitoring as standard as well. Plus, the Safe-Exit warning system that watches for oncoming traffic as you open your doors isn't available at all on the Honda HR-V. The HR-V's base trim is comparatively bare, with a basic 5-inch display and no smartphone integration or driver aids. Plus, the Kona is backed by Hyundai's leading five-year/60,000-mile limited warranty and ten-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty. Honda's warranties top out at three years/36,000 miles (limited) and five years/60,000 miles (powertrain).
Moving up the trim levels, the Hyundai Kona provides many amenities that are more expensive in the HR-V. Features like Proximity Key entry, heated front seats, and heated mirrors are all available on lower tiers in the Kona than in the HR-V. Plus, many of Kona's available features aren't found anywhere in the HR-V's lineup. Some examples include:
- Power-adjustable driver's seat
- Hyundai Digital Key
- 10.25-inch Digital Instrument Cluster (not on HR-V)
- 10.25-inch touchscreen navigation (not on HR-V)
- Wireless charging pad
- Rear USB ports
- Harman Kardon® Premium Audio
Hybrid and Electric Models
The Hyundai Kona Electric combines the crossover's engaging handling and ample practicality with a 201-horsepower electric motor with 258 miles of range. It's a great option For Edinboro drivers seeking an emissions-free solution to their daily commute. The 2023 HR-V doesn't offer an EV variant.
