2023 Hyundai Tucson vs. 2023 Chevy Equinox: Compare Compact Crossovers in Erie
With its comfortable accommodations, appealing features, easy driving dynamics, and head-turning style, the Hyundai Tucson is a compelling contender in the compact crossover class. The Tucson offers a refined and roomy cabin with attractive styling, cozy seats, and ample cargo capacity. And it's nicely equipped with abundant amenities and tech, including a suite of standard driver aids. It also offers a trio of powertrain options, including an efficient hybrid and a plug-in model with electric-only capability.
While there are plenty of options in the crowded segment, the 2023 Hyundai Tucson boasts an impressively well-rounded package that's tough to beat. To give you an example, here's a quick look at how it compares in a few important areas to another class competitor, the 2023 Chevy Equinox.

Performance
The 2023 Tucson finds its motivation in a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that sends 187 to the wheels through a smartly tuned 8-speed automatic transmission. The Chevy Equinox's 1.5-liter turbo-four got a small bump for the 2023 model year but still falls short at 175 horsepower. It also has a less-refined 6-speed automatic transmission.
Are you seeking more power or efficiency for your McKean commute? The Tucson Hybrid uses a battery-assisted 1.6-liter turbo-four to produce 227 horsepower while achieving an EPA-estimated 37 mpg combined. The Tucson Plug-in Hybrid leverages a larger electric powertrain to increase horsepower to 261 and EPA-rated fuel economy to 80 MPGe (miles-per-gallon equivalent). A 13.8-kWh battery enables an estimated 33 miles of electric-only range, making the Tucson PHEV a great way to check out the EV lifestyle without fully committing to battery power.
The 2023 Chevy Equinox isn't available with a hybrid or PHEV powertrain option.
Accommodations and Practicality
Fairview families will appreciate the Hyundai Tucson's spacious cabin, which offers more headroom, legroom, shoulder room, and hip room in both rows compared to the Chevy Equinox. The Tucson also boasts more utility, with 38.7 cubic feet of storage behind the 2nd row and 80.3 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. The Equinox's cargo capacity measures 29.9 cubic feet behind the second row and 63.9 cubes behind the first.
The Tucson also offers more features and makes many desirable amenities more accessible. The SEL w/ Convenience trim includes equipment like heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, a hands-free liftgate, proximity entry, and a digital gauge cluster. Similar content in the Equinox would add more than $1,000 to your charge list. Additionally, the SEL trim is available with leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, and a Bose premium audio system. The Equinox reserves these features for its top-tier trim, the latter two being optional.
Technology
The 2023 Hyundai Tucson has a standard 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. A fully digital instrument panel is available for the SEL trim and standard on higher tiers. And the Tucson's three top trims get a larger 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen with navigation. The Chevy Equinox has a standard 7-inch touchscreen. An 8-inch display is available by climbing the trim ladder, but navigation is limited to a package reserved for the highest Equinox tier.
While both models come standard with collision mitigation and lane-keeping technologies, the Tucson's base trim also includes Smart Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist, and Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist. Blind-spot and cross-traffic systems are available in the Equinox, but they're only standard for the highest trim (Premier) and don't include an intervention feature. Adaptive cruise control is standard for an Equinox trim.
