Compare the 2022 Hyundai Tucson and Chevy Equinox in Erie

Fully redesigned for its fourth generation, the 2022 Hyundai Tucson aims for the top in the crowded compact crossover class, with a comfortable and classy cabin, appealing amenities, and striking style. It's roomy, versatile, and rich with technology. And it offers multiple powertrain operations, including a plug-in hybrid with 33 miles electric-only range.

Compact crossovers represent the industry's most competitive segment, and drivers from Edinboro to North East, PA, have plenty of options. But the 2022 Hyundai Tucson delivers a compellingly complete package that's tough to top. Here's a quick look at how it measures up against a prominent class competitor, the Chevy Equinox.

Interior and Utility

The Hyundai Tucson and Chevy Equinox have similarly sized front rows, with the Hyundai offering a bit more legroom, shoulder room, and hip room. But rear-seat passengers will find Tucson appreciably more accommodating with an extra inch of headroom, an extra inch and a half of legroom, and 2.2 inches more hip room.

The Hyundai Tucson also offers superior practicality. With 38.7 cubic feet behind the second row and 80.3 cubic feet behind the first, Tucson offers one of the segment's most spacious cargo areas. The Chevy Equinox falls behind here, with 29.9 cubic feet behind the rear seats and a maximum capacity of 63.9.

Performance

Tucson's standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine (187 horsepower) provides more internal motivation than Equinox's 1.5-liter turbo-four (170 horsepower) while still offering slightly better fuel economy (EPA-estimated 29 vs. 28 mpg combined). It also equips an eight-speed automatic transmission compared to Equinox's six-speed gearbox.

The 227-horsepower Tucson Hybrid delivers even more potency and achieves small-car-like efficiency numbers, reaching an EPA-estimated 38 mpg in the Tucson Hybrid Blue. Finally, the 261-horsepower Tucson Plug-in Hybrid boasts swift acceleration and impressive EPA-estimated 80 MPGe (miles-per-gallon equivalent). And with an estimated 33 miles of electric-only range, it's a great way for McKean drivers to experience the EV lifestyle without fully committing to battery power. The Chevy Equinox doesn't yet offer an equivalent hybrid or PHEV powertrain.

Features and Tech

The Hyundai Tucson offers more features and advanced tech than the Chevy Equinox despite a lower starting MSRP. It comes standard with an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and offers more screen real estate via available dual 10.25-inch displays for the infotainment system and digital instrument cluster. The base Chevy Equinox has a 7-inch touchscreen, only offering an 8-inch display as an option.

Both models come standard with driver-assist technologies like collision mitigation and lane-keeping. But by stepping up just one trim level to the Tucson SEL, you'll get advanced features like Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist, Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist, and Smart Cruise Control with Stop & Go. Equinox offers blind-spot monitoring and cross-traffic alert systems, but they don't include intervention. And adaptive cruise control isn't standard for any Equinox trim.

The Hyundai Tucson also offers several innovative features not offered by Equinox. Examples include Hyundai's Blind-Spot View Monitor camera system, Remote Smart Park Assist, and Hyundai Digital Key.
